Small
Diameter Timber: Resource Management, Manufacturing, and Markets
was the theme of a symposium attended by 500 people that was held
in the WestCoast Grand Hotel at the Park in Spokane, Washington,
February 25 - 27, 2002. This publication is a compilation of papers
and abstracts of papers presented at the symposium. The symposium
focused on the complex challenges of managing densely stocked stands
of small diameter trees and the national significance of the small
diameter timber resource. New developments in management, harvesting
systems, manufacturing products using small log processing and wood
drying practices, and market issues for wood products made from small
trees were presented during three days of general, concurrent, and
poster sessions. More than 60 presenters from 15 states and Canada
shared results of completed and ongoing activities related to management
and utilization of densely stocked stands of small diameter trees.
We
are indebted to the speakers, moderators, poster presenters,
and exhibitors for their collaboration, excellent symposium
presentations,
and the papers and abstracts included in this proceedings.
A
symposium of this magnitude took the hard work and creativity
of many people. The program committee, in addition to the symposium
co-chairs, included: Don Bender, Keith Blatner, Ann Brelsford,
Janean
Creighton, Marlene Guse, and Mike Wolcott—Washington State
University; Richard Folk, Harry Lee, Steve Shook, and Fran Wagner—University
of Idaho; Jay Berube and Ann Camp—USDA-Forest Service; and
Teresa Catlin and Roque Nalley—Society of American Foresters.
In
particular, we wish to offer special acknowledgment and thanks
to several people whose help and efforts were extraordinary:
Marlene Guse for all of her help with brochures and the symposium
abstract
booklet, managing on-site registration, and editing and preparing
the proceedings; Ann Brelsford and the staff in Washington
State
University’s College of Agriculture and Home Economics Cooperative
Extension Event and Program Support Unit for managing registrations
and budgets; Janean Creighton for coordinating audio-visuals and
somehow getting all of the Power Point presentations to work; Richard
Folk for organizing and managing the poster session, providing
and setting up audio-visual equipment, and for helping link University
of Idaho and Washington State University resources and people;
and
Roque Nalley for organizing and managing the exhibitors.
